Consumer data methodology

Learn how we conduct the consumer research behind our Databooks.

Updated over a week ago

Consumer research is at the heart of what Mintel does. We commission exclusive and original quantitative consumer research for almost all our reports. This research brings an up-to-date and unique insight into topical issues of importance. Keep reading to learn more.

Localised consumer research

Our consumer research is usually representative of the online population of the location. We ask our questions in the respective local language in all locations. The results are exclusively available on Mintel.

In some countries, we work with external research partners to conduct consumer research.

To ensure we capture a broad spectrum of respondents, Mintel sets quotas for each age group, split by gender. We also set quotas by region. Click the links below to find out more about the sampling sizes and structures, and other location specifics:

πŸ“Œ Note: Since each location has unique characteristics reflected in the sampling structures and the way we conduct our research, we do not recommend comparing consumer research from different locations outside of our Global Consumer Databooks (see below).

Mintel experts also employ numerous quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques to enhance the value of our primary consumer research. Learn more about these techniques here.

Global consumer research

Mintel Global Consumer allows you to uncover the differences and similarities in behaviour and attitudes across consumers in 36 markets. For Mintel's Global Consumer research, we use an online research approach to interview 1,000 consumers covering age groups varying in range, depending on location, in each of our 36 locations around the world. Respondents are interviewed in regions and/or metro cities to represent the population distribution across each location for reporting.

Find more details, such as the sampling structures for each location, in this article.

πŸ’‘ Tip: If your subscription includes Global Consumer data, you can easily find the respective Databooks on our Consumer Data website by ticking Comparative multi-market under Survey Type in the filter menu.
